WASHINGTON, D.C. – On March 19, 2015 EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Kamala Harris for Senate in California.

“Kamala Harris is a battle-tested progressive champion,” said EMILY’s List President Stephanie Schriock. “As California’s top cop, she has fought to give women, children, seniors, and immigrants a fair shot. Kamala has already made history as the first African American, the first South Asian, and the first woman to serve as Attorney General in the State of California. Today she is poised to become the second African-American woman ever elected to the U.S. Senate – the first to be elected in over two decades. Kamala Harris is continuing Barbara Boxer’s legacy of standing up for all women and families, and the EMILY’s List community of over three million members is thrilled to endorse her strong campaign for U.S. Senate.”

Kamala Harris is a trailblazer who has already made history as the first African American, the first South Asian, and the first woman to serve as Attorney General in the State of California. Kamala is the daughter of an Indian mother and Jamaican father who met in graduate school, fighting for civil rights and equal opportunity for all. Following in her parents’ footsteps—and inspired by lawyers like Thurgood Marshall and Constance Baker Motley—Kamala went to law school at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. After graduation, she became a prosecutor, standing up for hardworking California women, families, and veterans. Today, as California’s “top cop,” her job is to protect some of her state’s most vulnerable citizens—and she has, winning record felony convictions for the people of California, motivated by her belief that “a crime against any one of us is a crime against all of us.” As Attorney General, she’s shown she’s not afraid to stand up to Wall Street, winning back $20 billion for California homeowners after the housing market crash and protecting hardworking middle-class families by writing a first-of-its-kind Homeowner Bill of Rights that instituted some of the toughest foreclosure reforms in the country.

EMILY’s List has raised over $400 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates since its founding in 1985, making it the nation’s largest resource for women in politics and one of the most successful political action committees in the country. Throughout its 30 year history, the organization has recruited and trained over 9,000 women to run, worked to elect 110 pro-choice Democratic women to the House, 19 to the Senate, 11 governors, and over 700 women to state and local office. EMILY’s List has also helped elect every single Latina, African American, and Asian American Democratic Congresswoman currently serving.
